Which crystal singing bowl should I choose first?
This is a great question and commonly asked!
Are you buying someone a gift and not sure which bowl to choose? Or are you a yoga instructor who wants to add bowl playing to your class?
We recommend as a great starter bowl: The Heart Chakra bowl in 10 inch size
The heart chakra bowl in the 10 inch (10") size is an excellent starting bowl! Here are some things to consider.
The Size of a Crystal Singing Bowl
The 10" size is a great starting point, it is not too big, but not too small and this particular sized bowl is very easy to play! Smaller bowls can tip easily (we go down to a 7" in our set of 7), but a 10" bowl has just enough weight that it will hold its ground as you learn to play.
As bowls go up in size they can become more difficult to play and take more practice, so starting with a 10" size is a great place to start!
The Note of Crystal Singing Bowl
Certain notes in certain sizes do have an affect on the play-ability of the bowl.
For example, choosing a higher chakra, most notably the Crown Chakra bowl in 10" is going to be harder to play and is not recommended as a first bowl to try. The glass is very thick on the 10" crown chakra bowl, which is tuned to B note and it takes some getting used to and practice to get this bowl singing.
The lower 4 chakras tend to be the easiest, Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus and Heart, and the Throat, Third Eye and Crown tend to require a little more finesse. Some have no trouble at all, others have difficulty getting them going.
The Heart Chakra
The Heart Chakra is also a beautiful sounding note to most people. For some reason C note, which is the root chakra, does not often appeal to people (even though it is our 2nd most popular chakra sold!), we hear from time to time that it just sounds off, even when in tune.
The heart is a familiar chakra for all of us, and we can all easily relate to the heart energy center. As a gift it is well received as a symbol of love, a wonderful gift idea for a spiritual friend or yoga instructor. Heavy on my heart, our heart strings, a broken heart... these are all ways we describe the energy of the heart center, which is our energetic center for giving and receiving love and compassion, and the primary chakra in relationships.
The beautiful vibrations produced by the singing bowl flow through the heart energy center and when we focus our attention there we can help this chakra release stagnate energy, repair and energize. It is a beautiful thing!
A Broken Heart
We once had a customer who was playing his heart chakra bowl and it broke while being played. This is very unusual! He reported that his dear friend who was suffering with a recent broken heart had literally just walked out of the studio when it broke. We imagined that the vibrations were flowing to him so strongly, as he left the room, it shattered. Yes, Kurma replaced it for free! :)
